2006 / February 5th/ Hemingway: 0.12

Well, it’s official. Hemingway is ready for a new release. I’d like to thank the dozens of people who volunteered to help me out during beta testing: with the exception of one report, everything worked perfectly. Chances are bugs will develop over time, but I want to get this release out there. Keep in mind this is still a product in development It has not gone under thorough testing, and probably still has bugs in it. That being said, I’ve tested Hemingway as much as possible, and I’m confident it’s ready for a release.

What’s new?

Blocks. Blocks are new in hemingway. Wondering what blocks are? Check out the screencast for an example of what blocks are, and how to use them. I think they’re going to be the next big thing in theme development. With blocks, I’ve added support for the most requested features: pages and blogrolls, while still maintaining simplicity for those who don’t want them.

Another new feature is the addition of easy-as-pie custom stylesheets. Just upload a new css file to /wp-content/themes/hemingway/styles, and it’ll show up in the Hemingway options panel. After that you can select the style and it will appear on your blog.

What still needs to be done?

In general: A lot of the little stuff. Adding support for multiple pages, working out a good solution for page navigation (it’s kind of hacked right now). There’s also some minor styling issues in safari that I need to get to, and some usuability problems with the administration section in Opera (it’s still usable).

Support

I’ve decided to open up some support forums for Hemingway, so I can better keep track of support requests, and answer commonly found questions. Plus, it’s nice to have an “offical” home to the ever-growing Hemingway community.

Whoa. Blocks. What a great idea…

Kinda makes me want to leave Textpattern behind and adopt WP and Hemingway.

this is exactly what i had been trying to do… for the most part anyways i wanted my so called “sidebar” below my posts.. cause for the most part my posts are photos.. i have chjanged a few things.. like made the Side info smaller and added the next and previous.. plus i made a meta block for my “bottom bar”

So thank you for this.. i had been trying with no such luck… and black is just the perfect colour for photo backgrounds i am heading over to ask a few newb questions now..

This is an improvement, but a lot still has to be done to make this theme worth a darn if you ask me.

Now, you have added the block elements, but why doesn’t the styling match the rest of the content on that area? The pages, blogroll and so forth should also be seperated by lines like the rest of the navigational element in that area.

  7. [...] Warpspire With some added functionality to customize the main page, with the Hemingway BottomBar?, that is, a drag and drop functionality taking advantage of the AJAX of the Admin area. Simply remove the function you don’t want, and drag the new function in. Also included in Hemingway is support for custom style sheets ala K2. If you are fan of the theme, you might want to check out the support forum, as I’m sure enterpising users will hack the theme options to add all sorts of info the main page as well as share “flavors”. Hey, just wanted to add my “thanks” and “good work” in here too. I’ve been searching voraciously for wordpress themes for the last few weeks but Hemingway is and continues to be my theme of choice. Keep it up!

  9. [...] [...]

I absolutely love this theme!!!! And I love hemingway as well byt the way ;)
One question, I just drag and dropped the page index to where the ‘ about’ post was. However the pages are underlined in black while the text is silver. The exact opposite of the other ‘ blocks’ Was it supposed to be like this or is this a little bug?
Will there be a contact template in the future?
Again I love this theme, thanks very much! After years of MT I finally found a reason to switch!

  21. [...] Warpspire’s Hemingway WordPress Theme takes this customization of WordPress Themes even farther using “blocks” and AJAX to help people change the look of their WordPress Theme. This “block” technology is part of the process behind the recent introduction of the new Sidebar Editor or “WordPress Widget”. If the Theme includes the functions for these Widgets, the user will see the Sidebar Editor on the Presentation Panel after choosing that WordPress Theme. Currently, you can only choose to include or remove the categories, Pages, search, archives, meta, and links/blogroll from the sidebar. [...]

  22. [...] I would also like to point out that “blogs” are changing from the traditional view. These are a few great designs and examples: binarybonsai.com tauquil.com has a sidebar but not a traditional one at that And another great example is the hottest theme right now for wordpress, warpspire.com/journal/personal/hemingway-012/ [...]
