They're only chasing safety by Underoath
  • Album: They’re only chasing safety
  • Band: Underoath
  • Play Time: 35:50

Summary

I know I’m a sucker when it comes to the latest-and-greatest- screamo/emo/punk/whatever band, but every once in a while there comes along a CD in this genre that sticks for more that just a couple of weeks. Underoath’s They’re only chasing safety is a great example of one of those albums. It’s a short, 10 song album with songs weighing in around 3-4 minutes - luckily every song’s worth listening to.

Song Listing

  1. Young and Aspiring
  2. A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White
  3. The Impact of Reason
  4. Reinventing Your Exit
  5. The Blue Note
  6. It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door
  7. Down, Set, Go
  8. I Don’t Feel Very Receptive Today
  9. I’m Content With Losing
  10. Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape

The Album

Artists don’t make albums any more. They make singles. And when singles fail, the album sales drop. You’ll hear a single on the radio one day, and then never hear of them again. I think the overall failure of the music industry is defined by this movement from producing albums to producing songs. Composors conduct symphonies; bands should compose albums. Underoath pulled this through very well with They’re only chasing safety. Not in the way that Dark Side of the Moon is an album, but rather that the individual songs come at just the right time, and just the right place. It’s hard to explain why most artists ignore this vital part of the production process. To me, this is what has kept this CD in my queue for over a year. I can listen to the whole album over and over without getting tired of it.

This album is slowly addicting, so beware. It might not stick the first few listens but it grows on you and you end up craving They’re only chasing safety. There’s a lot more to the music than first meets the ears, and pretty soon you’ll be wondering How did I ever *not* hear the keyboards?. All in all, a good album.

Singles

There’s definately a couple of stand out tracks on this album. I’d definately say #2 - A Boy Brushed in Black and White and #9 - I’m Content With Losing are my favorites. In fact, #9

Love the new design, but just noticed the Markdown isn’t working on the front page for this review (the italicized album name).
