2005 / December 17th/ December Randomness
Every once in a while I’ve got so much going on, I just can’t keep it all straight. I need a quick braindump.
Projects
- Hemingway - Yeah. I said a Wordpress port was forthcoming. It will be coming, with any luck by the end of December. But recently it’s taken back seat to a few other things. I want it to be a quality release, so it may take a while.
- Poetry with meaning - So close. So close. This time I’m actually getting things done, and refining a lot of the flow of the site. Rumor on the street is somthing will be hitting the streets by January.
- Drum Report - Cool shit is happening. Nothing more until it launches.
School
Despite taking on more personal projects than ever, taking harder classes, and working a fair amount, I managed to pull off my highest GPA yet. Go me. It’s also becoming all too clear that I’m ready to be done with school. I’m ready to move on with my life at this point. Alas, only five more quarters to go.
Lyrics, tabs, and whatnot
Down go the tab sites. No offense, but serves them right. You don’t start a business plan based on illegal foundations and complain when it gets shut down. Don’t do illegal shit, you won’t benefit from it. I can’t comprehend why these sites stayed up for so long. They’re clearly illegal, and have been proven to be illegal many times in the past.
On the other hand, I think a lot of musicians could go for releasing rights to tabs. It wouldn’t hurt them really–but that’s up to the artists in my opinion.
The fight against copy protection
Remember my rant about the Foo Fighters? Well damn I have a hell of a lot of respect for My Morning Jacket now. Turns out they’re sending free DRM-free copies of their CD to fans. That fucking rocks. I’ll buy these guys a beer next time they’re in SLO just for that.
Notable albums of late
- Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
- Jamiroquai - The Return Of The Space Cowboy
- Siko - Legsaround
Wordpress 2.0
Holy crap. I can’t wait. This is a major improvement to WordPress that takes it from slightly leading the pack to going past comparison. I’ve been playing with the nighlies and they’re a dream. Actual post preview rocks.
Ruby on Rails 1.0
Happy birthday RoR! Though this is a very late 1.0 release, it’s probably more mature than any other framework I’ve seen out there. Yes, this includes the ‘big-hitters’, it is my opinion anyways. I predict 2006 to be the year of the passion-coders fueld by Ruby on Rails. We’re going to see some cool stuff come out now that a lot of the barriers have been cut down.

I had no idea about the whole crackdown on lyrics and music sites - it’s incredibly immature. They have become like a little baby who cries to get what it wants. It just goes to show, when you’re up shit creek with no paddle you’ll grab anything.

What do you plan on doing once you finish school? Will you make a quick shift into Civil Engineering, or do you want to keep going with web development for a while more?

Good question Eddy. I’ll let you know when I figure that one out :)
