2006 / February 26th/ Hemingway updates & testing

Hemingway seems to have gotten some great attention lately. First Matt and that wonderful Wordpress.com crew got 0.12 up and running for Wordpress.com users adding a flury of new customization to the user’s hands. Shortly afterwords, Andy took some time to take the idea of Hemingway Blocks and added Wordpress Widgets to a good number of themes on Wordpress.com. I couldn’t be happier than to see my little baby grow up so fast :)

Hemingway Updates

I spent some time this weekend and added a bunch of new functionality to Hemingway, so I’ll need some testing before I release the next version (most likely Tuesday). Consider this release a maintainence release, as bug squashing was my major goal here. I’ve still got a couple more big features under my sleve… but I can feel Hemingway reaching a beta state (i.e. majors features solidified) faster and faster.

Also, a commonly asked question was answered: licensing. I’ve chosen the MIT license, which is as free as it gets. It’s been frustrating working with plugins in the past because of overly strict licensing rules. Do yourself a favor: read the license you’re releasing something under. It’s not all as “free” as perhaps you intended.

That blocks functionality almost makes me cry. How can it be so simple, so clean?

Incidentally, re: the limited colour selection (black or white)…

Have you considered integrating a “colour scheme” generator thing, i.e. so you enter one colour you like & it’ll work out the rest (e.g. http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html or http://wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html)

I’ve seen these in places work to good effect.

    Just a thought.

Don’t know if this is relevant or not, but I have been using the Hemingway template available at wordpress.com and have been having the “3rd colume wrap” problem when viewing in IE (v6.0.2900.2180…) on my system. Something I did this morning caused the Yahoo Tool Bar to show up again in my browser with my Yahoo messenger displayed as a sidebar. If the sidebar is on, my Blog shows with all 3 columes as it should. If I remove the Yahoo sidebar, the 3rd colume wraps again even though there is now a wider window to display in. Turn the Yahoo sidebar back on and the 3rd colume displays properly. Strange…
