2007 / May 29th/ Lego my Ego
There’s room for more ego than you ever thought around the web. But how much is too much ego? How much do you need to get the gig, and how much puts you in the pompus category? The more company descriptions, author bios and book colophons I read, the more I feel those writing them are starting to inflate themselves so much they’ll push the rest of us out of these interwebs.
I’m not going to name any names, but let’s revisit some of my recent noticables from confrerence presentations, portfolio excerpts, books, etc:
- Certain individuals are the best at: design, programming, strategy, and promotion. Oh, and the’ve done everything the web has to offer. Convenient.
- Near all freelancers can: program, design, implement, and manage while producing the best work you will ever see.
- Some individuals can speak volumes about subjects; lecturing thousands and creating “rules to live by.” All without having implemented a single site in the subject. Impressive.
- Some programmers can be said to produce the best code ever. Yet, they fail to grasp simple concepts such as OOP until months after proclamation of the quality of their work.
- Most all designers are experts at Javascript. Yet still inquire as to what the var keyword means.
- Several hosting companies have claimed to have built the largest implementation of X or Y platform. (Multiple dimensions, perhaps?)
I for one vote we tone down the ego a bit. It’s fine to show it off now and then, but let’s keep it within reason. Any claims to be “the best” in anything on the web is laughable to me. Hell, we don’t even know who our competition is most of the time.
In the meantime, I’ve thought it best to rewrite my professional introduction to compete in today’s market:
Kyle Neath is an expert in all facets of the web. He is an expert at all front-end technologies, including past, present and future plugins and can implement front-end designs faster than anyone else. He is also a master of information architecture, software architecture, and project management. He has personally directed, and developed, and implemented the largest web sites on the internet. Additionally, Kyle is master of the back-end with absolute knowledge of more than a dozen languages, and has personally written frameworks that are more efficient, easier to use, easier to deploy, and contain more features than Rails, Django, CakePHP, Symfony, TurboGears, and Seaside all put together. He has written every application possible on the internet, and better than all available solutions.
If you would like to contact Kyle, too bad. His price range is out of your budget and only currently accepts contracts from God Himself.

But if I use God as a reference, then can I work with you?

Priceless. Love the bit about having written better frameworks than the myriad of those available. At first glance, I thought you were saying “is proficient with …” but saying you bested them all - even better! :)

Yeah, I can totally do all of that.
