2006 / January 2nd/ (Re)introducing Hemingway
The time has finally come for me to unvail my first release of a Wordpress port of Hemingway. This is by no means a final version, nor even a complete version (in my eyes) but it should do a decent job at porting the look and feel of Hemingway to Wordpress.
In the coming months I will be working on and off Hemingway to try and add some of the cool stuff I want to add to this theme. I can see big things for Hemingway coming up, and it will be a slow journey. I’ll full on admit that. I’d like to thank all of the people that offered their help in getting this theme out.
I’ve decided to post my intentions on my roadmap page - if you have any ideas, I’d love to hear them. Also, if you want to help… feel free to hack away at Hemingway. I’m always open to any changes/fixes people throw my way :)
I’m sure this release will spawn a bunch of bugs due to lack of testing, so consider it an alpha version. I can’t gaurentee anything, but hope you all like it!

Really great theme. You have impeccable aesthetics.
I added this to WordPress.com and already people have started to pick it up. I made a few minor changes. First was making the list-style square more specific to the main div. Second was changing how the search box was positioned, because it was interfering with the title in Firefox. Finally I added a little bit under the “about” bit with a listing of pages, since people asked “where pages went.” The code was all very clean, I changed a lot less than I usually do with themes.
I’d be happy to share this code back if you’re interested, I’d also be happy to create a configuration screen for multiple color schemes if you do them.

That’s amazing to hear Matt. I’d love to see your changes, the search box was definately a hack (unfortunately) due to legacy HTML (Typo) that I didn’t feel like repositioning. The style changer would be great too. Feel free to drop me an email at kneath [at] gmail [dot] com.

This is a great template, one of the best WordPress templates I have seen. One think I would do, if I may saym is to move the comments on the left side in the top panel, just under “About this entry” part. I think it’d make it a more compact design. My eyes almost stopped after the comment form because I am used to see those forms at the end of entry, but in actual fact there is still a wealth of information about the blog just under it. I’d say, place the comments on the left so the rest of the info that is at the bottom pulls up.
In any event your design is great I really like it.

FIrst off, thanks for a wonderful theme. I liked the white variety best, which I think you should name “White Elephants” after a certain story by the author in question.
I have noticed a “bug” of sorts. Its the bug matt mentioned above, with the searchform. I wonder if someone would be kind enough to post the .css changes matt made. I’ve placed links in with the blog description, also, and these are all but impossible to use, because mousing over them excites the search and leaves those poor little links ignored.
Per Elisabetta’s comment, I placed a small link to the comments into the sidebar on the post page.

I love the clean look and feel of this theme, the only trouble I’m having with it that I haven’t been able to ferret out yet is why the sidebar doesn’t actually show up on the side, instead it shows up below the two most recent posts.

Do not adjust your set.
its just that the content at the bottom of the page is coded for in a document called “sidebar”. Many recent themes for wordpress have begun to reposition the content traditionally “on the side” as “secondary” content instead.

This is great, thanks. Can you help me with something though? I’d like to add monthly archive links and my blogroll to the sidebar. I guess I just adjust the sidebar in the theme editor but I’m a newbie at theme modification. Thanks in advance for any help.

I guess I understand that it will put the sidebar content at the bottom and that is what is now expected behavior. While I can live with a lot of stuff being at the bottom like that, I really really want some stuff to be at the top on the side. It must be an asthetic or GUI thing for me because other than that I have no real complaints.

First of all, I just want to say thanks for such a wonderful theme - it is elegant and sophisticated all at once. I can’t wait to see how you integrate additional features into it!
As for those longing for the code that Matt modified to fix the header/search form, here is what you are looking for. You need to make a simple modification to your style.css file. Near the very bottom you’ll find the CSS which styles “Live Search” (it says so explicitly, so you shouldn’t have difficulty locating it. Under that “heading” you’ll find the following style:
}
All you need to do is delete that, and replace it with following:
}
That should fix your problems (it did for my blog, anyways).

I noticed that your site has the same bug in it that I’ve got, after the revision of the live-search css. The whole page is wider now. It is possible to scroll from left to right now, where, with the previous css, that was not the case.

Noticed an odd buggy thing with the 404 doc, to keep it restrained within the boundries set by the header, the 404.php should read like this (hope this works):

I solved the non clickable header problem. It was simple.
Find this:
#header .inside{padding:3em 0;
}
Replace with this:
#header .inside{padding:10px 0 3em 0;
}
It worked for my site at least.

Hi! Lovely, simple theme - very much enjoying it.
I’ve integrated it with a nice flickr plug-in to make it work as a photo blog… early days just yet.
And I managed to fix the header problem - it was the absolute positioning in mozilla. Removing that, using align rights and nesting it in the same div as the header sorted it out…

Hi, there. Just wanted to say thank you for this theme. I use it since day one and modified it quite a lot so far.
Besides translating it to German I’ve spent much time tweaking here and there and will keep adding the newer features & bugfixes like the header z-order-problem and the newer 404 page - maybe I’ll publish my version some time, I’ll let you know.

Hi Kyle. Just wanted to drop a note thanking you for the gorgeous theme. It’s exactly the sort of theme I’ve been looking for since I started the blog up. Minimalist, elegant, flexible. It’s really that last part that sets your theme apart. I was previously using a modified version of the Tiny theme by Ben de Groot. And while it was both minimalist and elegant, it seriously lacked any extensibility. Furthermore, I’ve never been satisfied with the “river of news” style themes because it assumes frequent updates (of which I do not make). It is interesting reading comments on the Typo contest blog and elsewhere. There seems to be a fair amount of resistance to the manner in which Hemingway conceptualizes what a blog is. I won’t quite say Hemingway is revolutionary, but it’s close. Keep up the good work.
P.S. For some reason I doubt that you are even interested in receiving money for this project, but if I’m wrong, I’d suggest you setup some sort of a tip jar. Quality work should be rewarded you know. I’d gladly make a donation to aid the further development of Hemingway.

panoptican: Thank you for the very kind words, I’m glad you’ve found it flexible. I worked very hard to not only make the theme look good, but be transformed extensible to the largest extent.

The related_posts hash in functions.php lists Recent Entries, which causes two “Recent” and no “Related” to be displayed in the ajaxy-draggable admin panel.

Hemingway is by far my favorite theme for Wordpress. I installed it tonight and I’ll be making a few tweaks, mainly getting the login link on the homepage. It’s pretty tricky to get logged in right now.

I am pretty much a newbie at uploading this kind of thing. I did have a Pixelpost photoblog on my web site - but go too clever. I decided to do a bit of editing and wrecked it. I was going to upload a regular Wordpress, but came across your Hemingway-Wordpress (saw someone else’s photoblog) and I really loved the design better than pixelpost.
Where can I find instructions as to where to put in my database name, username, password etc. for the php.
I really want to get this going and get the photoblog back to where it was before I destroyed it!

hi, I also love Hemingway. It’s beautifully sleek and a wonderful layout. I am, however, trying to widgetize it, and with little programming knowledge am having bundles or trouble. I work in radio and am looking to upload .box or something to stream audio on my page.

The hemingway theme is excelent, I did an effort to widgetize it to support wordpress 2.3.3 version, and remove the old widget code, had a new stylesheet that I included some mini icons and added the display for tags.

hey all,
does anyone have proper code tweaked to prevent Hemingway from limiting the number of posts on the index page to just two entries?
Ideally I’d like to list 5 or 6 (scrolling vertically, of course), with the H’way template, but I’m no code monkey.
The Blogspot ripoff of H’way has this effect, but I’d rather stick with the WP.org platform - its far superior.
