When people ask me what I do, I tell them that officially I'm retired, but I'm busy creating problems for myself. The problem, reader, is that I'm no good at doing nothing. I need to be in the weeds, figuring stuff out, designing or building something new. A long time ago that used to be software, but nowadays, it's steered toward physical things in our built environment.
Aster Pines what I call the house I designed and now live in here in South Lake Tahoe. It's a house that focuses less on lake views (none) and more on building science and every day living. It's also the project that got me obsessed with 3D modeling and rendering with SketchUp and v•ray.
Have you ever wanted a place where you could just do whatever you want without prying eyes and judgement? I guess that's what Leaping Daisy is. It's a couple hundred acres of Sierra Nevada that I own with another friend. We build weird stuff, camp out in canvas tents, and cook up delicious meals with friends in the forest.
Aster Station was an ambitious project — to turn an old gas station here in South Lake Tahoe into a beautiful new coffee shop. An experiment taking a blighted corner and building something beautiful that would funnel wealth back toward our town (and not toward large corporations like Vail, Amazon, and out of town landlords). It didn't work out.
